What happens next? Common misconceptions about counselling

One of the most difficult things to do when you are considering counselling is making that first contact.

It may be that you haven’t had counselling before, in which case you may be apprehensive about what to expect. I have had many clients who have said it was difficult to ring up/knock on my door that very first time. My aim is to make this as pain free as possible!

Therefore, the first step is in actually making that contact – that could be through phoning, texting, emailing, social media – whichever medium you feel comfortable with. If you don’t reach me immediately, please leave me a message and I will contact you as soon as possible.

When you do make contact, I will suggest an introductory call to find out a little more on why you are looking for counselling. It is also my opportunity to let you know how I work, and what you can expect from me. Often we feel relieved once we have made that first contact, and a brief discussion beforehand gives you the chance to ask any questions you may have before we agree to begin counselling.

I will cover issues such as confidentiality, length of the sessions, cost, etc. Following this initial conversation, it is your decision whether you would like to start counselling, and we would then agree a date and time that is mutually convenient.

Face to face therapy is always easier, however my aim is to make you feel comfortable and confident in talking with me and if you are more confident with online or telephone counselling we can work in that way. Therapy is about understanding your feelings and how to deal with situations that you may be struggling with.

If you have any questions at all, or just want an informal chat, please do get in touch.

The first step can be the hardest to take, but tiny steps start your journey, so don’t hesitate to give me a call today.
